i am regularly baffled by the expectation that women of color, especially black women, owe people explanations for everything. tumblr is an easy microcosm to point to, but it’s pervasive damn near everywhere.

• wanna be treated like a human? you better have a nice academic jargon-filled justification for that because last we heard, women of color were just breathing cadavers!

of course this is DOUBLY insulting because the people demanding answers are usually those with disproportionate access to knowledge, education, and other resources that would enable them to easily find the answers to their questions if they would actually look instead of demanding that women of color sweat answers into their palms.

I want companionship but I hate people

if you feel this way, you’re probably an introvert!  because an introvert’s brain stays at a higher state of arousal than an extrovert, lots of socializing can cause overstimulation (which translates into feeling overwhelmed).  this is why introverts do well with just a few strong relationships and need lots of alone time to recharge after being around people.

introverts make up around 30% of the population, but that number is likely much higher on Tumblr (it’s an activity that attracts introverts).

Me

I always knew I was an introvert, and then a few years ago I learned about Asperger’s Syndrome which helped explain my other “weird”, anti-social behaviors.  I felt like I discovered a missing piece of the puzzle.

My life is a constant struggle between wanting to be alone, and wanting to not be lonely.
